LeadLink: Nonprofit Board Service

Because our region is home to about 1,600 nonprofit organizations, nonprofit boards have a powerful leadership role in the community. Without strong and involved board members, nonprofits struggle to fulfill their missions effectively. Through LeadLink, any local nonprofit can find board members among our LA Program graduates who are specifically suited to the organization’s mission and needs.

FAQs: Nonprofit Organizations

What is LeadLink?
LeadLink is a personalized online database managed by LA staff. We gather information from both nonprofit organizations who are seeking board members and individuals who wish to serve on nonprofit boards.

How much does it cost?
There is no charge for participating in LeadLink. It is free to fill out an online profile, and when we find a potential board member for your organization, we will provide you with his/her information for free. There are no hidden costs.

It is possible that after the pilot year (2012), this service will grow and we will be forced to require a small fee from participating organizations. If this happens, you will be notified in advance, and you will be free to decide whether you want to renew your profile. Take advantage of this service while it’s free!

How will this service help my organization?
It can be difficult to find dedicated, passionate board members. LeadLink specifically targets individuals who match your needs. In this way, we can help you find board members who:

    • Care deeply about your organization’s mission
    • Have the skills and expertise that your board requires
    • Are willing to make the necessary time commitment

How does it work?
The process is simple:

    1. You fill out an online profile on behalf of your organization.
    2. We search our database for individuals whose skills and interests suit your needs.
    3. We send you the names and contact information of possible board candidates.
    4. You contact the candidates at your leisure and decide whether you want to move forward.
    5. Each candidate is subject to your organization’s usual interview/application process.
    6. If you and the candidate are both happy, a match is made!
    7. If you and/or the candidate decide that it is not a good fit, you remain in our database.

What are the qualifications of the individuals you will be matching us with?
Most of the individuals in our database are graduates of the Leadership Asheville Program, which strengthens participants’ knowledge of, commitment to, and involvement in collaborative community leadership. The program is designed to develop, connect, and mobilize citizens from cross-sectors of the community, including business, nonprofit, and government. You can learn more about the LA Program by clicking here.

There may be some candidates in our database who are not LA Program graduates. These individuals are likely participating in our service through special circumstances approved by LA staff. If you are interested only in candidates who are graduates of the LA Program, you may select that option on your online profile.

All individual participants who are interested in nonprofit board service will be encouraged to enroll in Leadership Asheville’s nonprofit board member training program, which will be launched some time in 2012. This program will provide in-depth preparation for new board members as well as a refresher for more experienced board members.

Please be aware that Leadership Asheville does not guarantee the quality of ANY participating candidate. Participating nonprofit organizations are responsible for interviewing and evaluating each potential board member.

What kind of information will you be using to make the matches?
We will match individuals’ passions and interests with your organization’s mission statement, groups served, services provided, and area of service. Similarly, we will try to find individuals whose skills and backgrounds match your board’s specific needs. Please provide as much information as possible on your online profile to help us find a suitable candidate.

Will we end up with a board member we don’t really want?
No, we will not force any candidates upon you. You are free to interview and assess candidates in your usual practice and make each decision for yourself.

How long will it take to find a match?
Because this service is in its pilot year, it may take some time to develop our database. Obviously, the more people and organizations we have in our database, the easier it will be to find matches for everyone. At least for this first year, we are hesitant to make any predictions as to how long it will take to provide matches for organizations or for individuals. We ask that you remain patient and encourage others in the community to participate so that our database can grow!

FAQs: Individual Participants

What is LeadLink?
LeadLink is a personalized online database managed by LA staff. We gather information from both nonprofit organizations who are seeking board members and individuals who wish to serve on nonprofit boards.

How much does it cost?
There is no charge for participating in LeadLink. It is free to fill out an online profile, and when we find a potential board for you to serve on, we will provide them with your information for free. There are no hidden costs.

How will this service help me?
It can be difficult to get involved with nonprofits that really suit your interests. Often, you end up serving on boards because of the people you know rather than the issues you care about and the skills you possess. We can help you find a board…

    • Whose mission suits your interest and passions
    • That is in need of your skills and expertise
    • Whose time requirements fit your schedule

Do I have to be an LA Program grad to participate?
Because one of our organizational goals is to mobilize our graduates, they are the primary target for LeadLink. Non-graduates may participate in the service under special circumstances (e.g. recommended by a LA contact, special organizational connection, etc.). Please be aware that participating nonprofit organizations have the option to request that we only match them with LA graduates. If you’re a non-graduate, consider applying to the LA Program!

Do you provide any training or resources for participating individuals?
We’re working on it! We are in the process of developing a nonprofit board member training program, which will be launched some time in 2012. If you would like to participate in the program, you may indicate your interest on your online profile when you sign up for LeadLink, and we will be in touch when the training launches!

How does it work?
The process is simple:

    1. You fill out an online profile.
    2. We search our database for boards whose needs suit your skills and interests.
    3. We send your name and contact information (only information that you agree to release) to boards that may be a good fit.
    4. A board contacts you if they are interested.
    5. You research the organization and decide whether you want to move forward.
    6. You are subject to the organization’s usual interview/application process.
    7. If you and the organization are both happy, a match is made!
    8. If you and/or the organization decide that it is not a good fit, you remain in our database.

What kind of information will you be using to make the matches?
We will match your passions and interests with the organizations’ mission statements, groups served, services provided, and areas of service. Similarly, we will try to find boards whose needs match your specific skill set. Please provide as much information as possible on your online profile to help us find suitable boards.

Will I be forced to commit to a board that you think is a good match?
No, you will be free to conduct your own research and accept or decline a board invitation at any time.
