Bill Spellman
Bill Spellman has been a faculty member in the Department of History since 1988, teaching mainly in the areas of Medieval Europe and Tudor-Stuart England. He has served as Chair of the Department, Director of UNCA's Humanities Program, and Interim Dean of Curriculum. He is currently working as Associate Vice Chancellor for Programs in Humanities.
Bill worked at the British Library in 1989 as a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, and he served as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Tanner Humanities Center, University of Utah, during the 1995-96 academic year. He has also been the recipient of summer research fellowships at UCLA and at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bill is the author of seven books in the fields of early modern English history and comparative world civilizations, and he has co-authored two other books. His most recent publications include:
- The Global Community: Migration and the Making of the Modern World (published in 2001)
- The West: Culture and Ideas (published in 2003) and
- States and Peoples: A Concise History of the World Since 1945 ( to be published fall 2005)
Bill is currently a member of the advisory board for the Western Regional Office of Catholic Social Services. His wife Nancy teaches at Jones Elementary and his two children attend Asheville City schools.
