Dan Pierce
A teaching award nominated Professor of History at the University of North Carolina - Asheville; Dr. Pierce teaches courses including Appalachian History, Environmental History, Southern History, Foreign Relations of the U.S., North Carolina History, both halves of the U.S. History Survey, and 20th Century U.S. History.
Dan's research interests embrace a bioregional focus including such topics as: environmentalism and the environment in the southern Appalachian region, stock car racing/NASCAR history, Southern and Southern Appalachian Culture, and race relations in the South.
He has published many articles on these subjects. In 2000, his book The Great Smokies: From Natural Habitat to National Park was published through the University of Tennessee Press. You can look forward to future publications from Dan including articles in The Encyclopedia of Appalachia, The Encyclopedia of South Carolina, and the New Georgia Encyclopedia.
His consulting experience extends to on-camera appearances in such productions as "Pops: The Curtis Turner Story" and "The Mystery of George Masa." He has also spent three years consulting on "Speed as Spirit: NASCAR in America" a proposed museum exhibit at the Atlanta History Center in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution. Most recently, he has worked with the Buncombe County Library System in a program consisting of seven community programs and a thirty page booklet related to "Mountain Thunder: The History of Stock Car Racing in Buncombe County, North Carolina."
