Mary Lynn Manns
Dr. Mary Lynn Manns has been a member of the UNC-Asheville faculty since 1981. She has also worked in the banking industry and for U S WEST in Colorado. After spending 18 years in the Department of Computer Science where she taught courses in various programming languages, system analysis and design, and project management, she joined the Department of Management & Accounting in 2000. Her courses now concentrate in the areas of Management Information Systems and quantitative analysis. In 1995, she won the "Distinguished Teacher in the Natural Sciences" award.
Mary Lynn received her Bachelor's degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and went on to get a Masters in Business Administration at Western Carolina University. Her second Masters degree was in Management Information Systems from the University of Colorado. In 2002, she received her PhD from De Montfort University in England. Her thesis researched the issue of introducing a knowledge management technique, known as patterns, into organizations. Her book, Fearless Change: Patterns for Introducing New Ideas, is an outgrowth of that thesis work. Co-authored with Linda Rising, it was published by Addison-Wesley in October 2004, and after only a few months is now in second printing. The feedback has been excellent including a 5 (out of 5) star rating on amazon.com and The Best Book of 2004 award in the Journal of Object Technology.
Her other area of interest, project retrospectives, is the topic of her second book. She has led numerous retrospectives sessions for both industry and academia. These allow organizations to capture their successful practices for their knowledge management strategy and, at the same time, to examine how they can improve what they are not doing well.
Mary Lynn lives in Weaverville with her 19-year old softball star daughter.
